I have made another one of The Magic Onions crafts. They are pipe cleaners shaped to look like snowflakes and then we let them 'grow' their crystals.
You will need:
~Borax
~A Jar
~Pipe Cleaners
~Hot Water
First make any kind of shape out of your pipe cleaners. Kaile's was the blue one and mine the black. Then you will need a string, or another pipe cleaner in our case, to attach the 'shape' to a pencil/pen/stick so it can be free-floating inside the jar.
Each snowflake will need a cup of water. In our case we were making two snowflakes, so I heated up 2 cups of water in the microwave. Then you add 3 tablespoons of Borax per 1 cup of water, so we added our 6 tablespoons and then stirred to dissolve. - Which it never really all dissolved. We then poured 1 cup of the Borax water in each of the glass jars.
Then set your hanging pipe cleaners inside the jars and let them sit Undisturbed for about 24 hours. Fortunately Kaile had no want to touch them while they were in their 'sitting' stage.
After your 24 hours is up, break them free from the crystals that have formed on the bottom and sides of the jar. Lay them on a paper towel to dry. Then hang them up in a window so the sun can shine off its crystals.
Here is how the blue snowflake turned out:
And here is how the black snowflake turned out:
I would like to try this again and make different shapes and using white pipe cleaners so that we can add food coloring to the Borax/water to make the crystals have color!
